An Unpleasant Surprise:Your Annual Cost of Gas

by Scott Siegel

As the price of gas has steadily increased so has your annual gas expenditure. It has gotten to the point that it has become a major part of your family expense. But do you really know how much you are spending per year on gas? Most drivers know what it costs for a fill up but not many can confidently state how much they spend per year.

It is not hard to calculate and only takes a couple of minutes. Being fairly easy to do, one would think that all drivers would determine their annual expense. But most don’t. If they did they might understand the importance making some changes to lower that total.

There seems to be no end in sight to the daily increases to the price of gas. $3.00 per gallon, $3.29 per gallon, $3.49 per gallon are prices that we have seen this year. A while back $3.00 per gallon seemed really high. Now $3.00 seems like a good price!

The American Automobile Association uses 15,000 miles as an average amount of miles traveled per vehicle when they calculate costs. If you on average travel 15,000 miles a year in a vehicle that runs at about 20 miles to the gallon, you will purchase around 750 gallons of gasoline per year. If the price is $3.00 per gallon that equals $2250.00 per year.

If you have a two car family and both cars average 15,000 miles per year you will use 1500 gallons of gasoline annually. 1500 gallons costing $3.00 per gallon equates to $4500.00 in expense per year.

Of course if the price of gas is $3.49 per gallon the numbers are much higher. If you are a single car household driving 15,000 miles per year you will have an expense of over $2600.00 annually. If you are a two car household your yearly expense will be over $5200.00 per year. That is equal to $437.00 monthly. You could likely be spending more for gasoline than you spend on a monthly car payment.

Every time the price of fuel goes up at the pump by 10 cents, the yearly increase for your two car household is $150.00. When the price of fuel jumps 20 cents in a single day, understand that it will increase the cost to you by about $300.00 per year.

When you think about the annual cost of your gas it is very sobering. When you think about spending $5200.00 per year, you might want to serious look at ways to reduce that cost. When you realize that the 20 cent increase today will cost you $300.00 this year you might decide now is the time to do something about it.

More Deceptive Tactics by Sellers of Fuel Saving Devices!

by Scott Siegel

For those of you looking for a quick fix to your fuel economy problem in light of the continuously rising gas prices, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has some advice: be wary of any gas-saving claims for automotive devices or oil and gas additives. More than 100 gas-saving products have been tested and none of them do what their deceptive advertising claims.

There are a number of common deceptive and untruthful ad claims used by makers and suppliers of these alleged fuel saving devices. These are some you should be on the look out for.

One product that was advertised heavily was “Fuel Saver Pro,” a device that claims to be “EPA-approved.”

The ads stated “High gasoline prices at the pump shouldn’t scare you. They won’t anymore with this new EPA-approved device.” They insisted that if you purchases this device for $89.95, plus $6.95 shipping and handling, you would get an unbelievable 27 percent increase in fuel economy.

The simple fact is that this Fuel Saver Pro device has not been tested by the EPA and certainly is not EPA approved. An official EPA has stated: “We’ve tested over 100 gas saving devices, most of them magnetic devices that wrapped around fuel lines like the fuel saver pro - as if fuel is magnetic - and we haven’t certified them because they don’t work.

The EPA spokesmen also said that the sellers of this device manipulated the test they made their claim from to make sure they got the result they wanted. The maker used a short stop and go drive which uses a lot of gas, and compared it with a longer 25 minute trip on a high speed freeway. Naturally the results showed the highway trip had much better mileage. Of course this was due to the more economical method of driving at a constant speed on a highway versus a less economical drive in stop and go traffic. It had nothing to do with any device attached to the car.

Sellers and manufacturers of fuel saving devices also use a similar deceptive strategy. They state: “This fuel saving device is approved by the Federal government.”

No government agency endorses gas-saving products for cars. The most that can be claimed in advertising is that the EPA has reached certain conclusions about possible gas savings by testing the product or by evaluating the manufacturer’s own test data.

If the seller claims that its product has been evaluated by the EPA, ask for a copy of the EPA report, or check the EPA website epa.gov for information. In most instances, false claims of EPA testing or approval have been made.

These are just two of the many deceptive advertising methods used by unscrupulous gas saving device sellers trying to separate a fool and his money. Don’t play into their hands. The bottom line is, gas saving devices don’t work!

Gas Prices Ending Your Summer Travel? Gas Saving Tips for Travel

by Scott Siegel

As gas prices set records and you spend more and more at the gas pump, you realize the driving vacation you were planning will be more expensive than ever. It is so much more expensive you might be thinking of not taking that driving vacation at all. Do not fear, you can travel and not break your budget on gas by following a few simple tips.

The best fuel saving device is you the driver. Believe it or not you are in control of your gasoline usage. These tips and suggestions will allow you to lower your fuel costs while on that driving trip.

First thing you can do is get rid of all the extra stuff you have sitting in your trunk. Take out that extra tool kit, get rid of the box of paper you were going to take to the recycling center and take out the 50 pound bag of pet food you bought last week. Every 100 lbs of weight that you can take out of your car will save you 1 to 2 percent on gas. The lighter your load the more fuel efficient your car will be.

You already have scoped out the cheapest stations to purchase fuel at around your home. These stations will likely be lower priced than the fuel stations on your vacation route. So, fill up at one of these stations before you leave on your trip. You might even want to buy your fuel one day before you leave. For most people the actual travel day is rushed and hurried. You might run out of time to go to the station you planned on and might have to opt for fuel along your route. If you get your fuel one day before you leave, you can do it without worrying about deadlines and without rushing around.

Don’t use luggage racks. This is a very important tip. The wind resistance created by loaded luggage racks will drop your fuel economy a lot. Try and pack your travel gear inside the car. The wind resistance of a loaded luggage rack will get larger and larger at higher speeds. That means any freeway or highway driving will have a big impact on the fuel efficiency of your vehicle if you are using racks.

Use your cruise control on the turnpikes and freeways as much as you can. If you can keep the vehicle speed constant it will be much more fuel efficient. The cruise control on your car will do a much better job of keeping a constant speed than you will be able to maintain manually.

If you follow these simple tips you can take that trip without killing your budget on gas. These simple strategies will allow you to control your costs and take that vacation after all!

Beware of Deceptive Advertising Claims for Gas Saving Devices

by Scott Siegel

There are all kinds of gas saving devices being advertised now. Do a search in Google and you will find that google finds 1.5 million web pages concerning fuel saving devices. As with any situation where people smell money, unscrupulous individuals are always ready to steal your money with the latest scam.

The latest scam is trying to convince you that a fuel saving device attached to your car will miraculously cut your gas consumption 20, 30 even 40 percent. The federal government has done a lot of testing of fuel saving devices. From this extensive testing comes this advice.

The Federal Trade Commission warns drivers to be extremely wary of any gasoline saving claims for additives or devices. The test and research results to date show that there has not been any fuel saving device that significantly increases fuel economy in any way!

There are a few themes used in most gasoline saving product advertising. Here are some to be wary of:

Be very skeptical of the following kind of advertising claim. “This gas-saving product improves fuel economy by 20 percent.” Claims usually tout savings ranging from 12 to 25 percent. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has evaluated or tested more than 100 alleged gas-saving devices and has not found any product that significantly improves gas mileage. In fact, some “gas-saving” products may damage a car’s engine or cause substantial increases in exhaust emissions.

Another deceptive advertising method used are ones that are based on great and glowing testimonials from satisfied consumers and drivers. An example: “After putting your product on my vehicle, I saw that I started getting an extra 6 miles per gallon of gas.” Don’t rely on some amateur drivers claim to justify spending your money.

These types of deceptive advertisements use testimonials from happy drivers as the proof that the product works. No consumer or driver has the proper equipment or the training to test for precise changes in fuel economy. Even if the consumer had the right equipment they could not control the conditions that affect fuel economy a great deal.

Many different variables affect fuel economy, including road, weather and traffic conditions, and the vehicle’s condition. As an example, a driver sent out a letter praising a “fuel-saving” product. When the device was installed, the driver also had his car put through a complete engine tune up. Of course the tune up is not mentioned in the letter. The increase in gasoline mileage attributed to the “gasoline saving” device was most likely a result of the tune up alone. Since the advertisement with the testimonial did not mention this, other drivers could not have known that.

These are just some of the tactics that those selling fuel saving devices use to legitimize their claims. They are out there to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers desperate to find a way to lower their gas costs. Don’t become a victim of these scams. Be wary of their claims. Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
