Warm Up to Your Toaster Oven

by Bert Aurthurs

Homemakers are enjoying a renewed relationship with the toaster oven. This granddaddy of the microwave delivers the results cooks want, with the time-saving service that modern cooks need.

Toaster ovens are aptly named counter-top appliances that resemble both a tiny oven, and a big toaster. Handy substitutes to energy-gobbling full-size ovens, toaster ovens can crisp up your waffles, toast your bread, and re-heat just about anything.

Cooking with a toaster oven is as easy as using a microwave. Just dial the heat control to the temperature you need, place the food inside, and close the door. Your little toaster oven will do the same amount of work, yet use up just a little of your valuable counter space. It’s also easy to keep an eye on your food, as most models have glass windows.

If the dial on your toaster oven is set for “toasting”, rather than “warming” or “baking”, the toaster thermostat will be activated. The thermostat allows the built-in heating elements to do their job. Toaster ovens have heating elements at the top and the bottom of the inside oven compartment, to provide an even and balanced source of heat. Most toaster ovens also have variable heat controls, allowing you to choose the desired temperature. If you choose to set the control to “bake”, the baking thermometer will activate the heating elements to achieve your desired results.

However, the baking process involves an additional function: a timing mechanism to control the baking time. Of course, the baking abilities will depend upon wattage and capacity, and are often related to the quality and price of the toaster oven.

Like any manufactured product, toaster ovens have their fair share of mechanical problems. The most common complaint of toaster oven owners is that the electrical cord has burned out. The only remedy for this is to buy a new cord. Sometimes, the thermostat will become faulty, or can suffer minor errors. All is not lost, as toaster oven thermostats can be recalibrated. Check the manual or seek professional advice to perform this repair.

The toaster oven’s electrical system is also made up of the thermal fuse, solenoid and main switch. With regular use, all of these components are prone to problems. Toaster ovens less than one year old should still be covered under a manufacturer’s warranty, and may be repaired or replaced at no cost. Sometimes it seems to make more sense to replace the entire unit rather than paying a pricey service fee, but think carefully before you toss your toaster oven into a landfill site. The environmental consequences of throwing a unit away may outweigh the minimal time and money it will take to fix it.

Toaster ovens are handy appliances to have for reheating, cooking, baking, and, of course, toasting. If you haven’t used one lately, maybe it’s time to rekindle that warm relationship.

Leather Coat: Cleaning Genuine Leather Coat

by Jessica Anning

Though genuine leather coats are a popular outwear option, they are often a garment that causes a great deal of confusion for their owner. Leather coats are functional, stylish, and always a classic choice, but they aren’t the easiest item in your wardrobe to care for or clean.

Can you use cleaners on real leather coats? Can you take a leather coat to your neighborhood drycleaner? Can stains on leather coats be removed? These questions often plague the leather coat owner who happens to wear their coat in bad weather, for many seasons, or to a party with a clumsy guest who spills red wine on your coat.

There are ways to clean leather, but knowing a few basics about your leather coat helps make sure you don’t do more harm than good when you try to clean a spot or stain on your coat.

First, know that many stains on leather coats can be treated with simple soap and water. This works best if your coat is considered “finished” leather, which includes most leather coats sold by retail stores.

Avoid using waxes, silicone, or other leather preparations on your leather coat which will impair the natural ability for the leather to breathe. Also, don’t use caustic household cleaners, which can dry out or stain leather coats.

Leather coats, including traditional leather, suede, nubuck, and shearling, the skins can absorb and retain dirt if not treated or protected. While some leather treatments should be avoided because they can damage the natural skin, if you select a quality product and spot test it on an inconspicuous part of your leather coat, a treatment for waterproofing can be helpful to increase the wear of your leather coat.

For unfinished leather, saddle soap worked into the leather with a damp cloth or sponge works well to clean stains and spots. Wipe away any lather and allow the leather to air dry. Oil leather with a leather preservative after you have finished cleaning and the leather is completely dry.

If you have an unfortunate accident and spill something on your leather coat, you are best served to avoid rubbing the stain in to the grain of the leather. Always blot dry any stains. You can remove dry stains and marks by softly rubbing a pencil eraser on affected areas. There are also dry cleaners that specialize in spot treatments for stains on leather, though few will guarantee their results as stains on leather are quite difficult to remove. Bottom line - be as careful as you can to avoid the stains in the first place!

It’s Teatime, Mind Your Manners

by Emanuel Elley

People all over the world love their tea, but no one enjoys proper teatime more than the British.

We all love to break for tea when we need to steal a quiet moment to ourselves. But real teatime is meant to be shared with friends. Teatime is a social gathering with roots in old England. The British are indeed viewed as the world’s tea drinkers, and many residents of England are also accomplished growers and blenders of fine teas.

If you ever have the good fortune to attend a proper English teatime, accept the invitation and, for heaven’s sake, mind your manners. Not everyone has the good fortune to participate in teatime, and etiquette is an important part of the tradition.

Teatime traditions have relaxed over the years, but certain points of etiquette do remain. Teatime in England is certainly not the stodgy ceremony that it once was. In the past, for example, the lady of the house would keep her tea safely locked away, and would bring it out only when her teatime guests came to call. Today, of course, British women keep their teas in canisters. Another old British tradition would require a gentleman to pour his tea into the saucer, and sip it only when it was cool enough to do so. Just imagine the reactions of patrons at a modern teahouse if a man rudely drank his tea in this manner!

Even though some traditions have gone by the wayside, other points of teatime etiquette remain. Modern hosts and hostesses of proper British teatime will expect certain behaviors from their guests. For example, teatime guests are sent written invitations which outline all of the detailed information. From these invitations, guests will know what to expect at the gathering and will not feel awkward in any way.

There are certain items required for proper English teatime etiquette. A teapot is first and foremost. Silver teapots are used for all formal affairs, while china teapots are chosen for more casual or intimate gatherings. Tables are properly set with teaspoons, cups, saucers and a sugar bowl. Sugar tongs, a tea strainer, a lemon dish and a fork are among the required utensils. Forks are provided when cakes are being served, and knives are placed on the table to use with jam or cream for the scones. Every proper teatime table has a separate spoon for each jar of jam and cream. Refreshments are placed only on the table where the teatime guests are seated.

No proper British teatime hostess or host spends her or his time fussing in the kitchen. The preparations are made beforehand, allowing the host or hostess to entertain the guests in proper fashion.

Holding a proper English teatime is a fun way to entertain friends. Set out your teapot, cups and saucers, serve fancy cakes or scones, and invite your friends to join in the fun. You must remember though, this is teatime, so do mind your manners.

Proper Tea Sets For Proper Tea

by Dugan Venfield

Tea is highly regarded by many Chinese people, and is widely considered as one of the necessities to start a day. The preparation and consumption of tea plays a significant role in the Chinese culture. Since the Chinese have been drinking tea since time immemorial, they have developed a wealth of knowledge and experience with tea and tea making.

Proper tea preparation includes several steps. Firstly, one must select an appropriate tea set, depending on a variety of factors. This is an aesthetic consideration, as well as a scientific one, because the proper brewing of the tea depends in part upon the utensils used in the process.

What then, are the proper components of a Chinese tea set? A good set includes tea saucers, tea bowls, a teapot, and a tea tray. There are various design characteristics that are traditional, and the sets themselves often become a significant part of the artistry of drinking tea and making tea.

In fact, the value of some tea sets is astronomical, depending on the design and artistry, as well as the age and other factors. These sets would not be used for everyday consumption, but rather would be considered more like art pieces in the home, and perhaps kept in lovely cabinets on display for most of the year. Only on special occasions would they be brought forth for a special tea ceremony, such as at a wedding. The other tea set in the home would be used for everyday meals and small gatherings, and would also be highly valued and considered part of the family, and part of every meal.

It is not very difficult to select the right tea sets and identify their use. The selection of a Chinese tea set for every day use depends primarily on the types of the tea that the owners will be drinking. To some degree it even depends on in what region the people live.

For example, herbal teas and floral teas are consumed more frequently in the northern and eastern regions of China. Because floral teas generally use larger teapots to boil the water, people in these regions usually choose large teapots for daily use. Most commonly, these are ceramic pots, and they can be custom chosen to accommodate the number of people served at each meal.

In the Kangnam area, it is green tea that is most popular. Therefore using a ceramic teapot with a lid is most appropriate. In areas like Fujian, Taiwan and Guangdong, where people most commonly drink oolong teas, they usually use a regular kettle to brew the tea.

By comparison, experts suggest using either a ceramic pot or a regular kettle when brewing Gongfu tea or Hong tea. However, clear glass cups are the proper pieces to use when drinking a high quality tea such as Xihu-long-jing, Jun-shan-yin-zhen, and Ton-ting-bilei-chun.

Fine-leaf teas are best drunk with small teacups, and some Chinese tea sets have these rather than the larger cups. A large cup would have too much water in relationship to the fine tea leaves, resulting in them brewing too quickly, which will discolour the tea leaves and have a negative effect on the taste and fragrance of the tea. Today, many people prefer to keep green tea warm by using a thermos, and they believe that the color and flavor is enhanced. Many of today’s Chinese tea sets include a thermos to accommodate modern tastes.

Tea plates, tea set cover cloths, teaspoons, tea trays, and tea-brewing containers may be included along with those previously mentioned items in a Chinese tea set. The key is to get yourself a set and get started enjoying this ancient tradition.
